I checked the cornet out for valve adjustment. Defects found: Finish is 30% Dings/ dents all around, re-soldered braces all around, mouthpiece worn and tool marked. It disassembles, slides work, valves work, mouthpiece works, the cornet plays.

(there are a few people on the web that rebuild old student horns) but I have owned the Olds, original Bundy, Conn Director, & King Cleveland/600 and the Etude is a better horn. Vintage horns are fraught with peril and unless you are buying it from some one who will guarantee that the valves are tight & in alignment they are best avoided.
I play it all the time in everything from Big Bands to Military/concert bands (Taking out my Bach Strad that is worth in excess of 2k is a special occurrence these days) It is either a clone of or a re stenciled version of the Yamaha 2000 series horn and will be fine for what you want. I play trumpet professionally & bought one of these as a back up horn.
Go to Wood Wind & Brass Wind & buy one of their house brand "Etude" Bb trumpets for $100. Go find a music store with a brass repair department and ask to talk to a tech about what brands the schools push on the kids and which used ones hold up the best in their opinion. Newer ones, and King, which is essentially the same horn since UMI owns both, are just Ok. There is no way you'll find folks recommending Chinese/Indian horns yet. Lots of good makes, and most of them are fine for starters. Designed by Zig Kanstul, whose own line of horns are great (sold my Kanstul just a year ago after years of playing in a quintet). As mentioned, Olds Ambassadors are great horns. is one of the best resources for trumpet info. Or, it could be a dent in the valve wall, which means it has to be fixed by a tech. A soak and penetrating oil will get things moving again in that case. Stuck valves can simply be from letting the horn sit for years. A good brass tech can fix most problems quickly and usually pretty inexpensively. Yamaha 2335 if you can find one in your price range.
